The President of Tsinghua University announced yesterday that China's 41 key universities pledged set campus open day to the public regularly and meanwhile, provide for the public free access to their libraries, laboratories, research institutes and innovation centers. On behalf of the 41 universities, Chen Jining made the announcement during the opening ceremony of a week-long scientific camping event for the country's teenagers in Beijing.
In a joint initiative, Chen called on domestic higher learning institutes to shoulder their social responsibilities and actively spread scientific knowledge among the public, particularly among teenagers. He also suggested colleges and universities to hold attractive and instructive scientific activities for students, showing them pioneering achievements of science as well as popularizing the education of science and technology nationwide.
Following the ceremony, 1,300 high school students from across the country went on a visiting tour to nine universities in Beijing to experience college life in advance. The initiative was carried out collaboratively by the 41 renowned centers of learning, including Peking Universities, Tsinghua University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing Normal University, China Agriculture University, Nankai University, Tianjing University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and so on.
