Sage Indicator Line
Permalink

What the Heck?  Since when does FFSDenny use indicators?  It isn't a secret that my preferred way to catch a fish is to swing a wet fly.  The reality is that some situations required a well presented nymph on a dead drift.  One of the deadliest ways to hook up with a trout is with an indo/split shot/nymph rig.

I decided to try using my 11 foot 6 weight Sage Z-Axis switch rod as a long nymph rod.  I strung it up with the 260 grain Sage Indicator Fly Line.  Sage made this line specifically for using its switch rods in a single handed rod manor.  One of the difficult things of casting an indo/split shot/nymph rig is the casting.  Many fly lines don't help too much in this endeavor.  Sage came out with a fly line that has plenty enough mass to carry the load.

Using this line was very easy.  What I noticed was that I was able to roll out 30 to 40 feet of line very efficiently like there was a dry fly on the end of the leader.  Having an 11 foot rod with such a heavy line makes it effortless.  When i overhead casted the rig, it was easy going from a 30 foot waterload to 60 feet cast.

My only pet peeve of the line is that does not come with a welded loop.  I think Sage should work harder with Rio for them weld one on.

I still plan on using my switch rod more as a short Spey setup.  By having this line on my spare spool gives me an alternative when going single handed may be the better option.

Yikes. The difference between Steelie/Trout fishing a big river versus my little Sierra creeks and streams. You cast 60 feet in most of my favorite stomping grounds and you catching a tree branch 30 feet in on the far bank, or you are putting your line so far up/down stream that navigating the bends in the river becomes an issue. I am going to have to get down to Sac and play with this rig that FFSDenny has. Wonder if my arm would be sore after a few casts??
