Loreto, Mexico, can be found about half way down the eastern shore of the Baja California Peninsula.  By today's standards, it is a smaller destination area compared to La Paz or Cabo San Lucas.  It's main attraction is the fishing.

Loreto is a year round fishery, but prime time is in the summer months.  From June through August, schools of Dorado, swarm the Sea of Cortez.  Dorado from 8 pounds to 60 can be caught near the surface.  Billfish, like Striped Marlin and Pacific Sailfish, can be targeted, too.  If that action isn't enough, Roosterfish can be caught along the rocky shorelines of the the coast or the islands.

If one plans on going, it would be wise to have the proper gear.  For Dorado, 10 weight rigs will work for all except the large bulls.  For that purpose, have a 12 weight.  A Pacific Sailfish can be taken on a 12 weight, but a 13 to 15 weight rod is recommended.  For a Striped Marlin, a 13 to 15 weight rod is recommended.

Fly Fishing Specialties hosts at least one trip each year in July to Loreto.  For more information click here.
