A Simple Splayed Tarpon Fly
Permalink

The reality is that Tarpon flies don't need to be highly complex.  The splayed feather types use a few rooster cape feathers and only take about two minutes to tie.  Use your favorite colors.  Here is the Tequila Sunrise pattern (red and yellow).

Tequila Sunrise

Hook:  Gamakatsu SL12S 4/0 to 1/0
Thread:  Danville Flat Waxed Nylon
Tail:  4 rooster cape feathers - The feathers should be about 1.5x to 2x the length of the hook.
Body hackle:  1 or 2 rooster cape feathers.  Use 2 feathers if you want  bushier body or to show contrast like the red and yellow as shown.
