Here is a size #12 Golden Stonefly tied on a TMC 5263 hook. I used mottled oak Thin Skin from Wapsi with 3X Mono as the ribbing and Wind River Mottled Golden Stone Dubbing for the body and thorax. A few pheasant tail strands for legs on each side and call it done. Next time, I will turn the vice light away fr...

New Hook - Targus 3908T - The Perfect Shad Hook
(Preview)
Fly Fishing Specialties has added the Targus 3908T hook to its selection. It was bought primarily as an American Shad fly hook. It is a strong hook. Don't expect it to bend while fighting off multiple 5 pound shad hens. It has a large gape. This hook will set. It is tin plated just in case it will be u...

New Material - Mottlebou
(Preview)
Fly Fishing Specialties keeps on adding new materials every week. I will try to add them to the e-commerce site as soon as they come in. I first saw Mottlebou during a tying presentation by Andy Burk last year. He had this strung up marabou that was all speckled. There are a lot of browns, oranges, ta...

3-Wire Copper John-type Fly
(Preview)
Here is a picture of a 3-wire copper john that I tied last summer. I have no clue why I did not take a picture of the fully complete and trimmed fly, but this is what I shot. BTW, I tied 12 of these flies and have one left. They worked about as well as most of my copper johns in various single colors.

Hale Bop Leech
(Preview)
The Hale Bop Leech is a leech pattern that uses angora dubbing that is picked out. It can be tied full, or it can be tied sparse. I prefer the latter. It makes a great lake fly, but it also makes a great swing fly. For a leech, the Hale Bop is tied on a smaller hook (size 10 or 12). I like tying it on a Partrid...

The Tarpon Toad
(Preview)
The Tarpon Toad was made famous by Andy Mill in the movie, Chasing Silver: A Tarpon Journey. Since then, it became the fly to use for Florida Keys Tarpon fishing. What's interesting is the size. Andy used smaller sizes (1/0 and 2/0) to catch large Tarpon. Chartreuse and yellow is the most popular....

A Simple Splayed Tarpon Fly
(Preview)
The reality is that Tarpon flies don't need to be highly complex. The splayed feather types use a few rooster cape feathers and only take about two minutes to tie. Use your favorite colors. Here is the Tequila Sunrise pattern (red and yellow). Hook: Gamakatsu SL12S 4/0 to 1/0 Thread: Danville Fl...
